The Evolution of Architecture and Its Importance to the Nation

Nation Building is about structuring a nation’s identity using the facilities and abilities of the nation. The main goal is the unification of people in the society with various origins, cultures, and languages forming a unified peaceful environment. This evolutionary concept is a long-time social process. It has to be started, practiced, and evolved through a period of time which will result in technology and economical progress. For example, the evolution of any style or method of the act is brought into action and takes a period of time to develop and mark its existence. Let’s discuss this from the beginning!

History of Architecture Existence:

Architecture came into existence in the Neolithic period. It was the time when people stopped living in caves and started to think about their shelter and giving importance to its appearance and feel.

In the history of Indian civilization vast number of groups existed. Mostly Indian history reveals evidence of migrations and invasions during different periods. These immigrant groups transferred their cultural and traditional behavior patterns to the Indian lands and became a part of the process of cultural transformation in India.

Diverse Cultural Groups:

This adaptation of the immigrant groups and their interaction with varied groups in the nation led to the emergence of diverse cultural groups in India. This composition in Indian civilization reflected the cultural groups through Indian architecture across different regions of the country.

Some of the major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Agra have beautiful buildings, such as monuments, palaces, temples, churches, and mosques. These monuments and buildings are being a part of the architecture through generations, reminding us of the glorious history that India holds.

Colonial Period vs Modern Period

Then, comes the colonial period with the start of British rule that influenced the Western architectural forms in India. They made changes in the Indian government through which Nationalism started growing. People started to think and wanted to reconcile their national ‘identity’. To construct a national identity, India required its own Independent and historical specifications.

Indian generals and higher authorities started a town planning committee to re-establish the spaces and bring them to form. With this diverse framework, India began its journey toward modernity. Indian architecture having a combination of both indigenous style and external influences stand with its own unique characteristics.

Features of Architect:

• An Architect as a designer builds an environment by providing the foremost need ‘Shelter”. The stability and standard of a nation describe the welfare, safety, and efficiency of the habitat in it. Architecture, rather than going to aestheticism, should answer culture, and context along with nature and humankind. Architects do not design a structure just as an object but build it as a part of the whole surrounding.

• In the process of Nation building, a space or a building built must consider people’s past heritage to integrate National identity and pride in the community. The Architect’s role is to find ways to minimize the negative environmental impacts of buildings and structures and enhance their efficiency. In Indian history, some of the great civilizations like the Indus Valley, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Roman, were able to survive efficiently because of their strategic way of construction and city planning.

• As the population increases, the pressure for sustainable development also increases, leading to the demand for necessities from the environment. One of the most basic, important, and safest medium which connects all the places and cities in the nation are roads and bridges. They support transportation and accessibility throughout the country. Roads make our daily life more efficient and it plays a vital contribution to the economic development of the nation.
  
  
• A National library plays an important role in society by classifying the social, cultural, and political development of the nation.

Even during the COVID-19 crisis, it is evident how architecture played a role by rapidly creating shelters for patients in form of isolation chambers and became useful for the nation. Perhaps this evolution led to openings at India’s best architecture college and to people becoming passionate about building and changing the world for the better. In the end, it is clear that without the role of architecture it is impossible to boost the economy, heritage, and pride of a nation.
