Adobe’s Free Photoshop App Aims at Young Creatives on Mobile

Adobe has entered the mobile market by introducing a free Photoshop app for mobile phones. The app will initially be available for iPhones, and Android will be available later in 2025.

Introduced on February 25, 2025, the action brings the legendary editing software to a younger, mobile-generation audience at no initial cost, in addition to a $7.99-per-month premium tier. It’s a clear play to stay relevant in a world where phones are the go-to creative tool for the next generation. Here’s why this matters and what it offers.

Why Now?

Photoshop has been the king of photo editing since 1990, but its premium price and desktop focus have kept it out of reach for many younger users. Teenagers and twenty-something use free smartphone apps like PicsArt or Canva or depend on Apple and Google’s built-in features, which now have object removal and filters in addition to their previous Photoshop-only features.

Adobe, whose creative products generate more than half its revenue, was hit after a soft December 2024 outlook. This free app is a strategic shot across the bow, following young creators where they are: on their smartphones.

We’re wooing younger users whose phones are their go-to camera and editing tool,” explained Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe VP of Product Marketing for Creative Professional Apps. It’s a savvy shift for a business trying to reel in a new generation early.

What You Get

Out now on iPhones, this isn’t watered-down Photoshop Express imitation stuff—it’s an all-new mobile app with real muscle. Free, it has layers, masks, and selections, enabling users to deal with advanced edits such as merging images.

The Spot Healing Brush can remove blemishes with one tap, and Tap Select uses AI to capture objects quickly. Adobe’s Firefly AI enables generative fill and expansion, allowing you to add components or extend photographs effortlessly. It integrates with Lightroom and Express and includes free Adobe Stock resources—ideal for designing social media posts or YouTube thumbnails.

The $7.99 premium plan includes pro features such as the Magic Wand and Content-Aware Fill, 100 GB of cloud storage and web-based Photoshop. It’s a bargain compared to the previous $9.99 iPad plan, and Creative Cloud subscribers get it all.

Why Young Users Will Bite

Gen Z and young Millennials don’t only use their phones—they use them to make things. Their phones are the studios for everything from TikTok videos to Instagram posts. Adobe designed this app with them, testing it with next-generation creators to perfect the touch-focused design. The Free entry point allows experimentation, with the affordable premium option accommodating stingy budgets. Features such as Generative Fill introduce a gamelike swagger, matching social media’s speed and creativity tempo.

The Big Win

This isn’t about today—it’s about tomorrow. With Photoshop now free and mobile, Adobe is planting seeds with potential users who will stay around to become pros. It’s also a shot across the bow for competitors nibbling at its business. With planned monthly updates, Adobe indicates it’s ready to evolve. For young artists, it’s an opportunity to use a legendary tool without blowing the budget. Download it, and get started.
